Urban Burger has done well in the competitive Melbourne gourmet-burger scene. They managed to acquire / merge with the Burger Republic chain in 2007 and this has lead to a major rethink of their burgers.
We reviewed these guys in 2006 – and I think we were kind in saying that they were a "tough assignment". Essentially their burgers were substandard with too much bread and Dijon mustard. We received a blunt and nasty email from their Chapel Street store after our review, so they haven’t been on the top of our list to re-review. But with a revamp of their menu, it was time for another look.
Perhaps someone took notice of our site, more likely it was the common sense brought in with the Burger Republic team; but Urban Burger now offers 'the lot'. Although it only scored maximum points in a single criterion, this burger rated well because it was so solid in all of the others. Gone was the loud and flamboyant flavours of old, this burger did well to subtly contrast the flavours of beef against condiment.
Urban Burger stills offers a range of gourmet beef, chicken and vegetarian burgers, but it’s great to see some 'classics' on the menu as well.

Very average burgers that taste artificial. Will never go back.

I haven't been through the whole menu but I don't know if I'm missing out on much, the regular beef patties are rubbery and grissly - like they've used 1 star mince... 'The King' Island Beef pattie improves on this slightly, but overall the burgers don't have that wow factor that you expect with the asking price. My local store has a huge 'DON'T OVER SALT THE CHIPS' sign on the wall, but it's a shame they, and other stores don't take heed... Perhaps they're trying to make up for the fact that they only offer plain chips - where as the competition has seasoned offerings that don't rely on tonnes of salt to deliver flavour.
